John Wick (2014)

Rating: 8/10

After the death of his wife by cancer, ex-assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is in a grieving stage. Then a group of punk gangsters gang up on him and steal his car and kill his dog. Wick decides it’s time to come out of retirement for a little revenge.

This movie has a special place in my heart as being one that delivers on awesome action and having a pretty good story despite it being a very simple plot overall. As far a revenge movies go though, there’s only a couple entries I’ve seen that I like better (Kill Bill 1 & 2 springs to mind).

The action is pretty sweet. It’s got a particular style to it that feels like it was done on the cheap but done so well and with its own style of a mix between gunplay and kung fu (along with a couple of chase sequences) you won’t notice. Also, I really like that Wick’s some kind of super assassin and his weapon of choice is one pistol. It matches his way of doing things, getting up close and personal, and Keanu Reeves does a pretty good job playing him, not that it’s a character with a lot of depth or anything but you really feel like he’s a grizzled assassin with nothing left to lose throughout the film.

Okay, this movie probably has a lot to complain about, not much plot, barely any characters who you know anything about and it just seems like everyone happens to know John Wick and what he does more out of plot convenience than anything else. But none of these things bother me, and truthfully, I feel it’s part of the movie’s charm. So I’m not penalizing this film for anything, though a masterpiece it is not, but it does give me everything I want for a film like this. Also, soon to be the beginning of a trilogy, though that isn’t always a good thing…

SCORING:

+8: Just a great revenge movie with lots of action and violence. YAY! VIOLENCE!
