Oliver hunts a man calling himself the Mayor. Also, the Canary reveals herself to Oliver, and it’s someone from his past (isn’t it always…). Oh and Laurel might have a drinking problem. Also, boring CEO stuff as Oliver slowly loses control of his company…maybe (it’s hard to say, I don’t know anything about office politics and don’t really care to know). On the island, Oliver is still captured!
Actually, let’s talk about the office stuff first. Mostly it reminds me of the boringest parts in Iron Fist (a show that was already kinda boring, mostly). I mean, the fact he’s CEO isn’t really important to the story in any way. Batman’s a CEO too (I think…) but no one actually wants to see Bruce Wayne dealing with office politics, unless it actually plays into the main story. This doesn’t do this, though Sebastian Blood does, but it doesn’t really matter one way or the other if Oliver keeps his company or not (to me).
Oh, and I will always fault this and any other show in Arrowverse, or probably any show I eventually review, for having a plotline where it’s just “we need to give these characters something to do.” After Arrow uses Laurel to find Canary, she could have just been left alone. No need to give her a drinking problem, or whatever. I mean, she’s getting over Tommy’s death, I guess it’s fine. I just was kind of bored by it. Also I’m a recovering alcoholic who’s been sober for a year and a half now, so I already know how STUPIDLY BORING it is to be an alcoholic. It goes something like this. “Stop Drinking” “Okay” keeps drinking anyway, “I thought I told you to stop that” “I will this time” keeps drinking anyway. After realizing finally that drinking makes you a bad person “Okay now I’ll quit.” And they do. Except in movies, or any visual medium, they usually go to AA as that visually shows that they’ve quit. I’ve never gone to AA by the way. I’ve heard it has the same success rate as people who just quit on their own so therefor it doesn’t do anything. That’s just what I’ve heard, I don’t actually know because I’ve never gone.
I like the island stuff as Oliver gets captured and has to go through one of the most Russian hazing rituals I think I’ve ever seen. It’s short but “less office stuff more island” should be a rule for this season. The office is slowly becoming the new Tommy as a pointless way to eat up time…
There’s a lot of good stuff here too. I wish the Mayor wasn’t just a one-off villain as the actor playing him, Cle Bennet, really kills in the role. The Canary teaming up with Arrow is always cool. Did I mention that the Canary (Caity Lotz) is my favorite character in all the shows? Well, she is.
+8.5: Good but not great
-1: short but pointless office crap
-1: God I miss drinking (no, I really don’t)
-1: you have to give all the characters something to do…
+1: Cool action involving superhero team up
+1: Anatoly! (I can say that without spoiling anything right?)
