Laurel enlists Arrow on her search for dirt on Sebastian but he always seems to be one step ahead. Meanwhile, Roy is losing control of himself as the Mirakuru flows through his system and he lands a man in the hospital. On the island, Sara and Ivo talk via radio.
Overall this was a really good episode. It has a good pace, and I like the how-catch-em mystery going on surrounding Sebastian and Slade as Arrow and Laurel seem to be somewhat clueless at this point about what really is going on. Also, the plotline with Laurel being addicted to pills is done somewhat subtle at first, and when it’s blown open and she’s confronted by her father, a recovering addict himself, it’s a good scene with appropriate drama without melodrama muddling things up. It also relates directly with things happening in the main storyline. This is how you work with your side characters to make their parts interesting rather than forcing a plotline just to give them something to do.
Also, though Sara’s part seems to be wholly on the island at this point in the show, and the parts on Lian Yu are fairly short in this episode, I like what they do with her. She’s a great character, and a natural leader. One of the things that she herself doesn’t seem to realize until much later in the arc of the Arrowverse, but you can tell here as she talks to Ivo. She’s willing to make the tough calls. Though she and Ivo seem to have built a certain codependence with one another on the barge, she’s able to move on from him with the goal of survival, no matter the costs, and leaving behind those that don’t deserve it. Oliver might take a few years, story-wise, to realize what kind of a man he really is, Sara is a hero five years ago, on the island, just without the League of Assassins training yet. Did I mention Sara’s my favorite character in every Arrowverse show? Cuz she is.
