I really like Ray Palmer. Even though last season I was really against the boring office stuff, here, even though all he’s doing is office stuff, Ray is so charismatic and fun to watch, I wouldn’t mind sticking with him and Felicity even more, even if it’s not really going anywhere in terms of story.
This had decent action, when there was action, and I liked the flashbacks with Thea and her father. But there’s a lot of weirdly slow parts, either for the purpose of character drama or exposition, and I’ve just realized what it is, and it’s something that’s been an issue since the start of this season: Tonal problems. Whenever it switches from one scene to the next, it’s an entirely different tone than the one before it. It’s as if a totally different director came in to direct each scene with no knowledge of where it fits into the overall story and wasn’t allowed to talk to the other directors to know how they were taking things. What made the first two seasons of this show work so well was that every episode had an overarching theme which tied the whole episode together. Without that theme things feel disjointed and nothing meshes. Maybe the writers aren’t sure how to take the show at this point? Either that or they’re trying to set up everything for what will turn into some kind of season long thing. Either way, it feels like Batman v. Superman. They’re just trying to do too much in too short of a time.
