Spider-Man s1e24: Wrath of the Sub-Mariner

Air Date: February 20, 1982

Rating: 5.5/10

Kingpin is polluting the ocean and Namor has to come to the surface to stop him. He’s very preachy about it.

This feels more like an episode of “the Sub-Mariner” with a Spider-Man cameo than the other way around. Spider-Man is essentially reduced to a “super-hero in distress” and Namor is basically flying and swimming around telling everyone that pollution is bad, also smoking, but mostly pollution. It’s a strange episode that I feel the network might have made this just to say it’s “educational” or “environmentally friendly” or something.

I like seeing Kingpin but he feels out of character, as if the writers didn’t really know who he was before adding him to the show. Which is weird when they seem to know who Namor is pretty well.

SCORING:

+7: Better than the last few

-1: Very preachy about pollution

-0.5: Feels like Kingpin was just thrown in there for the sake of it, at least it’s not another made up villain
