As Homer and Marge go out for a night on the town in order to save their marriage, a really mean babysitter is left in charge of the Simpsons’ children. However, Bart and Lisa learn she might not be who she appears.
This was originally meant to be the pilot episode but was apparently so poorly animated that they needed to extensively redo it and it became the season finale instead. It’s a very strong episode in those regards. I think every character is fully developed as we know and love them, which makes me wonder if there were rewrites done as well. Homer is a dummy and a goofball who will go to the ends of the Earth for the woman he loves. Marge is a good mother and the voice of reason who’s maternal instinct outweighs her own selfish needs. Bart is a crank-calling brat who’s smarter than he appears. Lisa is a nerdy girl with real metaphysical problems. Maggie is a badass, ninja baby. Yeah, I can see why this was originally the pilot as it does give us a view into each characters psyche while also telling a great story as only the Simpsons can do.
As a minor complaint, even though this needed extensive re-animations, there’s still a few moments where they’re noticeably bad. It’s only a bit here and there but it surprised me considering the facts.
+10: A great episode to end the first season even if it didn’t get to start it
-0.5: Some cracks in the animation that make this particular aspect worse than any other first season episode
